Traveling to Madrid is amazing. It is like being in the New York City of Spain, and there is so much to see and do. No matter what type of person you are, or what you are looking to get out of your trip, going to Madrid is a safe bet that you will find what you are looking for.
For the quiet types, there are thousands of side streets, sleepy book stores with literature of all languages, and plenty of places to sight see. If you are more adventurous, there is a ton of night life and monster clubs that stay open all night.
For me, it is one of the best places in the world because one minute you can be standing on a crowded street and feel like the world around you is going a mile a minute, then just a few steps away you can be in a cozy coffee shop enjoying some of the best coffee of your life.
If you have always thought about traveling to Madrid, don't hesitate. I won't lie to you, depending on where you are coming from, the flight can seem scary. If you don't speak perfect Spanish, or any Spanish at all, it can be really intimidating to head to a country where you may not be understood. But the good thing about Madrid is that it can really feel like home. Unlike some of the more rural or suburban parts of Spain, there are a lot of English speakers in Madrid. Most bars and restaurants offer English menus, and most people you will interact with will be able to speak a little English. That isn't to say you shouldn't come with a few choice phrases ready in Spanish, it just means that if you get stuck chances are someone around will be able to help you.
And, after all, what is travel without a little risk? Without living on the edge a little. Throw yourself into the culture, find yourself eating dinner at ten o'clock at night, drink wine like a local and eat the food they serve you. Spain is a place to really unwind and let your hair down. There are so many opportunities to just sit down and relax. Restaurants will let you stay for hours just to read or talk and enjoy so local fares and shops and bars stay open much later than in the States.
Don't let the fear of traveling let you miss out on just how wonderful Madrid is. It is a city so full of history and beauty that once you go, it will be hard to leave. And don't worry, you will pick up some Spanish, and you will learn to order off of a menu like a local. You will leave with so much more than you came with, and that is such a great feeling. But be forewarned, you will leave a piece of yourself in Madrid to. I have been back again and again because I just can't seem to stay away. A trip to Madrid is never just a one time experience.
